MECOPP Sheds Light on Domestic Abuse for International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day, we were honoured to host an afternoon of events in which we celebrated the resilience and strength of women, and also took a concrete step in addressing a pressing issue within our communities: domestic abuse.

During the event, we unveiled our Domestic Abuse Resource, generously supported by the gender-based violence team at Public Health Scotland. This resource takes the form of ‘postcards’ that dispel myths and share candid experiences, and we hope will go a long way in raising awareness of the many forms domestic abuse can take.

You can view the resource in its entirety at the bottom of this page.

 A Burden Shared

At MECOPP, we believe in creating spaces for dialogue and empowerment. That’s why we began our domestic abuse peer support group, a safe space where women who have experienced or are currently experiencing domestic abuse can come together fortnightly over coffee and cake.

During these sessions, participants engage in honest discussions and share their burdens. Domestic abuse is insidious, and has a pervasive impact on individuals within our communities.

"I walked into abuse with my eyes closed."

In an effort to raise awareness and dispel misconceptions, participants created our Domestic Abuse Resource as a concrete measure to help those with similar experiences.

The postcards are adorned with poignant words drawn directly from the participants' own narratives – shedding light on the various forms domestic abuse can take. They also signpost avenues for support on the reverse: Scottish Women’s Aid; Rape Crisis Scotland.
