Georgia McCann

Gypsy/Traveller Community Health Worker

I’m Georgia, I am and introduce myself as a Scottish Gypsy/Traveller. I started volunteering with MECOPP more than 9 years ago now, In autumn 2021 I applied and was successful to get a job within the Gypsy/Traveller Community Health Team Project to be a Community Health Worker for Gypsies and Travellers.

This is so exciting as the CHW’s are all travellers and we are here to help/assist and advise our community from the ground up, to promote and bring awareness about health and wellbeing and to make services more accessible which are sadly not in 2022 for a variety of reasons.

Hobbies: As a travelling woman my family is my life and I do whatever makes them happy [I get peace this way] seriously I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and having wee people to tell all our old stories to and the history of who we are.

Jobs: I have worked in many jobs through my life and also within the settled community, these were the most challenging as not being able to express myself and be the person my  parents [culture] brought me up to be is the worst experience ever  and I do not want my children to go through this.

I am proud of who I am and the culture I belong to.
